Wet, dry or grinder..........????
Hi everyone,
I've been let down by my tiler and I need to get this project finished and as there's not loads I'm about to do the tiling myself.
ive got a 10mm porcelain tile to look forward to.
I wanted to get a cutter that will do me well on this job but also something I can use on more in the future now. (Fed up of being let down)
i dont want want to spend fortunes but I know with anything you do get what you pay for.
I want to get something that deals with porcelain as this seems to be what most my customers have now.
so what's the best options, a wet cutter, will a dry cutter cut it ha or as my previous tiler used a diamond blade on his grinder which never gave great cuts.
thanks

Which wet & straight cutter ?
Alright guys
I plan on tiling long term, learning to lay anything. I know most of the tools I want.
I have slightly limited funds just now as just starting. Any ideas on what brand, size (wet cutter) and best prices etc ?

Replacing Rubi TX900N with Sigma
I've always been Rubi, but have been thinking of switching!
I am happy with my TX900N but I am totally bamboozled with which Sigma model would be the best replacement.
I'm not sure if I could get my head around the "pull" type but need a similar size cutter.
A bit miffed that only the mid range Sigmas have cases available for them or am I missing something?
Help & suggestions appreciated!

Which 180mm blade for cutting porcelain tiles.
I bought a Vitrex 750 tile cutter the other day to cut some Wickes 600 x 300 x 9mm glazed porcelain tiles.
The standard blade chips badly so I also bought a Vitrex Hi Glaze blade 103406 which cuts better but still chips the edges a bit and has a bit of runout in it.
Is the runout in the blade likely to cause the chipping?
Any recommendations for a blade that will not chip or is it just what will happen with this type of tile?
If it's a blade I can go and pick up today that would be very helpful.
I've also tried cutting the tile both ways up and also tried covering it with tape first too but that seems to have little effect.

whoops ! kinda bought a £350 hoover !
The reasoning I paid such an amount for the item I hear you ask...
Well...upon working around the corner from where I live I have had to tell a fair few pestering polish 'metalmen' to sod off from my skip and leave me be !
I left my wickes wet and dry stashed behind said skip where I nipped to the shop to get a few items to keep me lubricated from the sweaty heat beaming down upon me ! 30C it was I say !
So I came back to the house with some cold, cold water and lollies...to find the motor of the hoover gone !
Oh well, its the first time I have had anything nicked down here so I thought it was the right time to buy a new one as this thing was booling dust out of every crevice once sucked up.
So I dithered and dathered and almost pressed the 'add to basket' button...but I could not do it.
Off I went to work the next day to find my wicked wet and dry upturned in the skip...LESS ITS WHEELS !! hahaha
I could not believe nor stop laughing at what had happened...to cut a long story short I came back the next day to find the metal pegs that were left by the wheel lighteners removed too !!!
That confirmed my add to basket press and shortly she arrived !
My festool midi !!!
She purrs like a kitten and I am looking forward to purchasing some tools to attach to her as I am currently being taught to fit kitchens now. I've had my fill with backsplashes and what not.
ITS TIME TO LEARN !

Manual Tile Saw
Any recommendations on a manual saw?
I just bought a Topps Tiles budget saw and the blade bent. Is this normal?
Maybe I was putting too much pressure on the blade? It's quite flimsy though, and any less pressure wouldn't have cut the tile.
Also, just used my Rubi 40 N Plus tile cutter for the first time (test on a single tile) and it takes quite a bit of pressure to snap the tile after scoring. Is this normal?
Cheers

Carbide Grit Blades For Cutting
Just a quick question if I may..
Is it possible to cut tiles with a jigsaw using a carbide grit blade or should I just not go there? Do I need to wet cut the tile or can it be dry cut?
If not, is a carbide grit hacksaw ok?
Cheers

Manual or Electric - Some Advice Needed
Guys
After several years of reading and admiring some of the work being carried out I've taken the plunge to revisit the bathroom and have opted for some 600x300mm porcelain tiles from CTD.
So after finally getting round to starting, I dug out the old and what was trusted and please don't laugh Plasplugs Tommy Walsh electric cutter and a new Marcrist CK650SF Diamond Tile Blade from Screwfix I set about cutting a few tiles ---- disaster, major amount of chips along the cut line.
This leads me to my question, the cutter is really on its way out so it's time to replace, but what with?
I'm willing to spend on this so I had a look at the Rubi DU200 BL which I know is a basic entry cutter but would I be better going to a manual cutter, Sigma / Rubi??
Any advice would be appreciated.

New ATS diamond tools vacuum dry core drills tested
Alan from ATS diamond tools sent me a handful of new and untested vacuum brazed diamond core drills to test. These are different from the existing dry core drills in that they are designed for use in a drill (speed over 1500rpm).
I was very impressed! I was drilling into a full bodied vitrified porcelain tile.
Alan sent me 1 of each of the following - 6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 12mm (A bits). He also sent me 1x6mm bit (B bit).
I started off using my SDS (normal drilling mode) but soon changed over to my 18v Makita cordless. Even though this only has a 1300rpm top speed, it was far easier to drill with this. Not sure if that is because my SDS is so heavy or because there is very little feedback when drilling.
I started off with the 'B' 6mm bit. Even though this was the first bit I tried I didn't really like it. It seemed a bit vague and didn't cut too well. I gave up after starting the third hole with this bit. The two holes it did cut were quite good but it seemed to struggle quite quickly.
I then moved onto the 'A' 6mm bit. This cut with ease. The wax core was working really well to cool the bit and each hole cut consistently and cleanly. I moved onto the 8mm bit which seemed much the same as the 6mm. Nothing noticeably negative to say about either of these really.
The 10 & 12mm bits weren't as good initially as the two smaller bits. They were very difficult to start off and wanted to stray a lot. Once they had cut in, they cut with ease. I did notice though that they had a habit of chipping the face of the tile where chunks of the core were being ejected out of the side. These both had an issue of the last bit of the core getting stuck in the bit which then never came out. I carried on drilling and found with the 10 & 12mm bits that after around 5 holes the cores "jammed" in the core with no way of me getting them out.
All in all I am very impressed with these bits, but mainly the two smaller sizes. They are more versatile than the angle grinder bits and seemed to cut better too! Thanks Alan
Alan from ATS Diamond Tools will be able to clarify any points such as differences between the A & B bits etc

My New Toy.
Treated myself to a new Rubi TX700 from Tile Giant this morning. This is my first serious manual cutter having previously owned a Big Clinker. Got it home and grabbed the hardest porcelain tile I could find. I have to say, this machine is the best thing since sliced bread. The cut is so smooth and sweet and the breaking power is incredible.
Following many hours of research, I chose the Rubi over a Sigma because I wanted to see my pencil marks on the tile and with the Rubi, I can clearly see all the way along the cut.
Just wanted to share my wonderful happiness to all on the forum and I would like to give my new toy a name so any suggestions would be very helpful. Many thanks.

Rubi TX 700 problem.
So I bought a new Rubi TX 700, tried a few cuts at home and thought it was the dog's danglies. However after using it for a day on a job, I have discovered it has a major flaw in the design. When you get to the end of the cut, the cutting wheel slams down on the metal part of the cutter bed. Also when the metal guide is in position the wheel runs right over it. After a few cuts the wheel is blunt. I mean seriously, am I missing something?????
